Corktown, Hamilton

Corktown is one of Hamilton's four original neighbourhoods, settled primarily by Irish immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s. The name references County Cork in Ireland, reflecting the heritage of the workers who came to build Dundurn Castle for Sir Allan Napier MacNab. MacNab paid many of these labourers with plots of land in what became Corktown, establishing a tight-knit Irish Catholic community that endured through much of the 19th century. The neighbourhood sits south of King Street East, east of John Street, and extends toward the base of the Niagara Escarpment. Over the decades, Corktown evolved from a working-class Irish enclave into a mixed-use urban neighbourhood. The area retains some of its historic row houses and Victorian-era buildings alongside newer apartment and condominium developments. Its proximity to the downtown core and the escarpment trails makes it a compact, walkable neighbourhood with easy access to both urban amenities and natural spaces. Corktown Park provides a small green space within the neighbourhood, while the nearby escarpment trail system offers extensive hiking and cycling opportunities. Sam Lawrence Park, perched atop the escarpment at the neighbourhood's southern edge, is one of Hamilton's most popular lookout points. The Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath, is accessible via the Wentworth Stairs and the Chedoke Radial Trail. For shopping and services, residents rely on the nearby downtown core along King Street and James Street South. The Hamilton Farmers' Market and Jackson Square are a short walk to the west. The neighbourhood is close to St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, one of the city's major hospital campuses.
