Downtown Edmonton is the city's central business and cultural district, bounded roughly by the North Saskatchewan River valley to the south, 105 Avenue to the north, 109 Street to the west, and 97 Street to the east. The area has been the commercial heart of Edmonton since the early fur trading days, and today it houses the provincial legislature, major office towers, concert venues, and a growing residential population. Over the past two decades, Downtown has undergone a significant shift from a strictly 9-to-5 office district into a mixed-use neighbourhood with purpose-built rental towers, condominium projects, and street-level retail. The ICE District development, anchored by Rogers Place arena, has been the largest catalyst for this transformation, bringing new hotels, restaurants, and residential towers to the northeast quadrant of downtown. The legislature grounds provide the largest green space adjacent to downtown, with manicured gardens, wading pools, and interpretive trails covering roughly 23 hectares along the river bluffs. Louise McKinney Riverfront Park and Henrietta Muir Edwards Park extend along the river valley at the eastern edge of downtown, offering walking paths and picnic areas. Sir Winston Churchill Square anchors the civic and cultural core, surrounded by City Hall, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Stanley A. Milner Library (reopened after renovation), and the Citadel Theatre. Rogers Place arena and the adjoining Stantec Tower form the centrepiece of the ICE District entertainment complex.
