About Strathcona
Strathcona is one of Edmonton's most historically significant neighbourhoods, located on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River. Originally the independent town of Strathcona before amalgamating with Edmonton in 1912, the area retains a distinct identity anchored by Whyte Avenue (82 Avenue), which serves as its main commercial and entertainment strip. The neighbourhood stretches roughly from 99 Street to 109 Street, south of the river valley to around 76 Avenue. The Strathcona area is characterized by its heritage architecture, with numerous buildings dating to the early 1900s that now house shops, restaurants, theatres, and galleries. The Old Strathcona Farmers' Market operates year-round from the historic bus barns on 83 Avenue, and the neighbourhood hosts the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival each August, the largest fringe festival in North America. Nearby Amenities
Mill Creek Ravine is Strathcona's most prominent natural feature, running north-south through the eastern portion of the neighbourhood with a paved trail, footbridges, and forested slopes. The ravine connects to the North Saskatchewan River valley trail system, providing access to Gallagher Park (home of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival) and Cloverdale. Tipton Park and Gazebo Park offer smaller neighbourhood green spaces. Whyte Avenue provides the primary shopping and entertainment district, with hundreds of independent businesses spanning several blocks. The Old Strathcona Farmers' Market building on 83 Avenue operates year-round. The Muttart Conservatory's pyramids are visible from the river valley nearby. For fitness and recreation, several gyms, yoga studios, and the Kinsmen Sports Centre are accessible in the surrounding area.
