The Confederation Line (French: Ligne de la Confédération) is a light rail transit (LRT) line under construction in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Confederation Line will be part of the O-Train network operated by OC Transpo along with the existing diesel-powered Trillium Line. While using light rail vehicles and technology, the Confederation Line is completely grade separated with high frequency service and so falls towards the light metro end of the spectrum. The project was approved by Ottawa City Council and the contract was awarded in December 2012. Construction began in 2013 and the downtown portion of the project will be substantially completed by 2017, the 150th anniversary of Canada's Confederation. The line is expected to open in 2018. At a cost of just over $2.1 billion, it is the largest infrastructure project awarded in the history of the city. The cost of phase 2 is $3 billion making the total cost $5.1 billion.
