Gillies Lake is a 20 ha (49 acres) lake in the heart of Timmins, Ontario. It is served by a publicly accessible 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) walking trail. A boardwalk offers wheelchair access avoiding a hill climb and Lakeshore Road. This small lake was named after Alex Gillies, a prominent figure in the history of the city. In 1915, the lake was about three times its current size. Since then, mine tailings have taken over what was once the northeast part of the lake. Goldcorp is currently in the process of restoring this area. During the summer a swimming area is designated on the northwest side of the lake. Picnic areas and public washrooms are also available. In the winter, skating is often available in the southwest bay. They also just added in a wakeboard park available in the summer.
