About Bowness
Bowness is one of Calgary's oldest communities, located in the northwest along the Bow River. Originally an independent town incorporated in 1912, Bowness was annexed by Calgary in 1964. The neighbourhood retains a distinct small-town identity, with its own main street along Bowness Road, a community hall, and a strong sense of local character. The Bow River forms the community's southern and eastern boundaries, and Bowness Park - a city landmark since 1911 - sits at the neighbourhood's eastern tip. The community has a diverse mix of original post-war bungalows, renovated homes, and new infill construction. Bowness Road NW serves as the commercial spine, with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and services that reflect the neighbourhood's independent character. The area has seen gradual renewal while maintaining its accessible price point relative to other inner-city communities. Nearby Amenities
Bowness Park is the neighbourhood's signature amenity, a 34-hectare park along the Bow River featuring a lagoon (used for canoeing in summer and skating in winter), picnic shelters, playgrounds, and mature tree groves. The park underwent a major restoration following the 2013 flood. The Bow River pathway system passes through the community, connecting to Edworthy Park to the east and the western pathway network. Bowness Road NW functions as a walkable main street with grocery, pharmacy, hardware, restaurants, and specialty shops. The Bowness Community Association operates a hall that hosts fitness classes, social events, and community programs. The neighbourhood is close to the Alberta Children's Hospital and the Foothills Medical Centre, both located to the east in the University District area.
